Personal Security and Safety Tips for Travellers

Travel safety and security does not start only when you arrive at the airport. Rather, it begins the moment you have decided to take a vacation and at the moment you pack your things, just before you leave. So, to make sure that you are safe from the beginning of your trip through the end, consider the following advice.

First, plan how you are going to protect your financial instruments, primarily cash and debit or credit cards. Many travellers unmindfully handle their currency in public. There are some of them that can be seen handing a wad of cash to a vendor or cashier, relying on this person's good will and honestly to complete the transaction. This practice must be avoided since it can draw attention to con artists who are after tourists. To spread the risk and to ensure that you will not be a target of thieves and snatchers, divide your money. Do not carry any more money than that which you are willing to lose. For example, you can store large denomination bills and unneeded credit cards in the bottommost part of your suitcase, and carry only the amount you require for the day.

Second, follow general safety procedures when you are sightseeing, especially in a foreign country. Plan ahead and make sure you know where you are going. Know where the police departments are located as well as any other place where you can seek safety. And also, eliminate all tourist identifiers; learn how to blend and become like a local as much as possible.

Lastly, avoid danger areas at all times. These include nightclubs and adult entertainment facilities. Also, avoid using short cuts through parks, alleys, and the like especially at night. Do not assume that all areas are safe because local criminals know the places frequented by tourists.
